The Doll I Never Played With

The Gift That Changed Everything

I’ve probably told this story a million times already- but you get to hear it for the million-and-one time.

When I was a little girl, I wanted a doll for Christmas. It was probably one of those dolls that sang or lit up when you pressed a button, but if I’m being honest, I don’t remember the details. All I remember is how badly I wanted that doll.

I grew up in a single-parent household, watching my mom stretch every dollar just to keep food on the table. So, in hindsight, wanting a doll was probably a big ask. Food mattered more than toys- but to my seven or eight-year-old mind, the doll felt essential. Besides, I was a picky eater anyway, so I figured I wouldn’t be much trouble where food was concerned.

As Christmas drew closer, I waited in quiet anticipation, wondering if I would actually get my gift. And then, a few days before Christmas, my mom took me into town- into Mandeville- to a popular store called Bashco. The place was crowded with frantic shoppers rushing to buy last-minute gifts and supplies for Grand Market night. My eyes lit up as I scanned the walls lined with dolls. I finally chose one, my mom paid for it, and we headed home.

I thought that was the end of the story.

It wasn’t.

Shortly after, my mom received a phone call from a friend, another single mother. I don’t remember every detail, but I do remember this: her daughter, who had a disability, had been promised a doll by her father. At the last minute, he canceled. Again.

The mom was devastated. Her marriage was falling apart, her resources were limited, and now her daughter’s Christmas was on the brink of disappointment; one she’d already experienced too many times before. In her despair, she called my mom and poured out her heart.

After hanging up, my mom sat me down and gently explained the situation. Then she said something that broke my little heart: What if we gave the doll to her?

I didn’t understand. I had wanted that doll for so long. I hadn’t even gotten the chance to play with it yet. Why did I have to give up something I loved? My seven-year-old mind struggled deeply with the idea. Eventually, though- through tears and heartache- I gave in.

That was my first real encounter with sacrifice.

Now, I know my small childhood sacrifice doesn’t compare to the sacrifice Christ made for us. But what I do know, based on my limited experience-is that sacrifice is rarely joyous in the moment. Still, it produces fruit that is priceless.

I thought I had lost something that day. Instead, I gained insight into something far more valuable: the gift of easing someone else’s pain. The joy of putting a smile on another child’s face. The quiet honor of being used as a vessel through which God could show His love. My mom was the conduit- and she taught me that it truly is better to give than to receive.

My seven-year-old heart didn’t fully understand what I had done, but somehow, I believe it pleased God. Months later, an aunt in America heard the story and secretly bought me a Barbie doll. Yes, a Barbie. Something my mom could never afford. I received it with joy, just as I had learned to receive everything- with gratitude, not entitlement.

Reflecting on the Greatest Gift

As I prepare for the Christmas holidays now, I find myself reflecting on the love and faithfulness of the Father toward mankind. That He would send His only Son to earth to take our place- to bear our sins so we could be redeemed- is a truth that never loses its weight.

Not only did the Creator demonstrate His love through sending His Son, but His mercy, faithfulness, and grace continue to meet us daily. These are constant reminders of His unwavering commitment to us.

I cannot begin to count how many times I’ve failed Him, yet He remains faithful. Amidst so many inconsistencies, He has been my one constant.

Honoring the Giver This Season

As we prepare our gifts, our homes, and our hearts- loving on those closest to us and extending compassion to those less fortunate- may we never neglect to honor the Giver of the greatest gift to mankind.

The Father gave His Son, Jesus Christ. And through Him, we experience love, redemption, and hope. After all, He truly is the reason for the season.

Until next week, have a Merry Christmas- and thank you for sticking around. 🎄✨
