Sitting With My Feelings
I often sit with my feelings and allow them to run their course instead of trying to ignore or suppress them. During that time, I try to peel back the layers of what I’m feeling to understand the root of it. I make an effort to separate what is actually true from what may simply feel true in the moment, since emotions can sometimes distort our perspective.
I usually don’t feel like talking when I’m feeling negative emotions. In those moments, I spend time reflecting quietly, and the Holy Spirit often brings scriptures to mind that help counter any lie or negative belief I may be holding onto.
Talking With Trusted People
When I’m ready, I talk through my feelings with a trusted friend or mentor. Having someone I trust listen and offer perspective often helps me process things more clearly.
Sometimes we simply need someone who will listen and help us think through things with honesty and wisdom.
Reflection and Scripture
Prayer is also a major part of how I cope with negative feelings. Praying and reading scripture give me support, clarity, and insight that I might not have otherwise recognized. These practices help ground me and remind me of truths that are bigger than my immediate emotions.
Addressing Issues Before They Build Up
Over time, I’ve learned that ignoring negative feelings only creates more problems. Unresolved emotions don’t disappear; they accumulate. When they are left unaddressed, they tend to build up and eventually come out as anger or frustration, often at very inconvenient times. In times past, I allowed things to compound before addressing them. That approach did not work out well. Because of that, I’m currently learning to address issues sooner rather than allowing them to compound over many unpleasant experiences.
Giving Language to My Feelings
Part of that growth has been learning to give language to how I feel and clearly communicate how I want to be treated, while still doing so respectfully. I try to express my feelings honestly (without casting blame), allow others the opportunity to respond or change if they choose, and then decide how I will respond moving forward.
Approaching situations using these strategies helps me process negative emotions more healthily and quickly.
Final Thoughts
Processing negative feelings well is still something I’m learning. But through reflection, prayer, honest conversations, and healthier communication, I’ve found that negative emotions don’t have to control my reactions or relationships.
Instead of ignoring them, I’m learning to listen to what they reveal and respond in a way that promotes growth rather than resentment.
And that process is still ongoing.
